The Suraj Prakash Granth

The Suraj Prakash is the Sikh epic, a million-word verse chronicle of the ten Gurus, completed by Great Poet Mahakavi Bhai Santokh Singh in 1843, the year he died. He didn't invent it; he inherited it, drawing on living memory passed down from those who had walked beside the Gurus themselves. In scale it eclipses the Iliad and the Odyssey combined; regional myth and imagery thread the verses metaphorically, anchored to eyewitness memory carried by witnesses noted for their integrity and honesty. The result is one of the largest sacred epics ever written by a single hand, providing the narrative context for the lives in which the Guru Granth Sahib Ji was revealed.
